Meiotic Cohesin Promotes Pairing of Nonhomologous Centromeres in Early Meiotic Prophase

In many organisms centromeres associate with non-homologous partners early in meiosis. Here, the yeast synaptonemal complex (SC) protein Zip1p is shown to localize to core centromeres independently of other SC proteins. Zip1p localization is preceded by and requires the meiotic cohesin Rec8p, and Rec8p is necessary for centromere coupling.
